For patients missing all or most of their teeth, Fountain of Youth® dentures (FOY) offer a second chance at a restored smile without the downsides of traditional dentures. Traditional dentures are considered by many to be bulky and artificial-looking. FOY dentures offer an enhanced fit and feel, while creating beautiful and youthful facial contours. With FOY dentures, patients can eat, speak and smile while looking and feeling youthful.
Dr. Wayne Sutton of Sonoma Smiles is pleased to offer FOY dentures. Here, he answers commonly asked questions about them.
How are FOY dentures different from traditional dentures?
Traditional dentures consist of artificial teeth that sit on top of a pink acrylic base that mimics the appearance of natural gum tissue. These dentures are designed to sit on top of the existing gum, without restoring the teeth to the proper height or proportion. FOY dentures are designed with your teeth’s original height and proportions in mind. Restoring your teeth to the original height is important for a proper bite and it also maintains your facial features in their optimal and youthful position so the overall facial appearance does not become sunken or hollow (a concern with traditional dentures).
What are some of the benefits of FOY dentures?
FOY dentures offer a number of benefits over traditional dentures. First, the custom fit of FOY dentures prevents artificial teeth from slipping out of the mouth, making speaking, eating and chewing much easier. In addition, unlike traditional dentures, which typically do not sit well on the gums and therefore put uneven pressure on the jawbone, FOY dentures are designed to distribute even pressure on the jawbone, minimizing discomfort. FOY dentures also promote continuous jawbone stimulation, which minimizes the risk of oral health issues. The stimulation also prevents the facial structures from collapsing, thereby contributing to a full and youthful facial appearance.
How are FOY dentures designed?
FOY dentures are designed with the principles of neuromuscular dentistry in mind. Neuromuscular dentistry is the study of the mouth as a system of muscles, nerves and bones. While traditional dentures are created using a static impression of your mouth, FOY dentures are designed based on a dynamic impression of your mouth, one that captures the muscles in motion. The dynamic impression also captures the ideal height and proportion of your teeth for a custom fit.
Who is a candidate for FOY dentures?
Anyone who is a candidate for traditional dentures is a candidate for FOY dentures. Candidates for dentures should be missing all or most of their teeth in the lower arch, upper arch or both.
How much do FOY dentures cost?
The cost of FOY dentures is comparable to the cost of traditional dentures. The exact cost depends on a number of factors. Like traditional dentures, FOY dentures can be covered by dental insurance (either fully or partly depending on the specifics of your insurance plan). Many dentists also offer financing options so patients can pay for their dental treatment, including FOY dentures.
