How Can I Make Brushing Fun?

How to make brushing funNearly every parent has had to badger their child about brushing their teeth. While brushing may not be the most entertaining activity for kids, it is certainly a vital part of their oral health. If you’re having trouble convincing your child to brush regularly, Rohnert Park dentist Dr. Wayne Sutton of Sonoma Smiles offers a few fun ideas to motivate your child.

1. Let Your Child Pick out Their Toothbrush

There are so many fun, themed toothbrushes out there for children to choose. Let your child pick one of their liking. You can also let them choose a toothpaste flavor and floss that they like — just make sure that both have the ADA seal of approval.

2. Create a Story

Turn brushing into story time by creating a story where the toothbrush is the “good guy” who is there to save the day. You can also create a finger or sock puppet character to “help” or guide your child as they brush and floss.

3. Reward Your Child for Their Brushing

Sometimes children need a little incentive to brush and floss their teeth. You can encourage good oral health habits by creating a rewards chart where you and your child can monitor their brushing and flossing and earn rewards. Possible reward ideas include more playtime and a new toothbrush.

4. Try a Smartphone App

There’s a plethora of smartphone and tablet apps out there, some that help encourage good oral hygiene habits. For instance, Colgate Tooth Fairy gets kids excited about brushing and flossing. Another easy way to make sure your child brushes their teeth for the recommended two minutes is by playing a fun or interactive song. Brush DJ is an app that plays two minutes of music while your child races against the clock to brush their teeth before time is up.
