Why You Shouldn’t Skip a Dental Exam

Submited by Sonoma Smiles on January 1, 2018

At Sonoma Smiles, Dr. Wayne Sutton and our team understand that life can get busy and schedules can fill up with important obligations. It can be tempting to cancel or put off a scheduled dental exam and cleaning because your list of other responsibilities is high. However, we strongly encourage you to reconsider. Here’s why.

Regular Exams Help You Avoid Serious Dental Issues

During a typical dental exam, Dr. Sutton and our team of hygienists check the teeth, gums and soft tissues of the mouth for any abnormalities or signs of disease or decay. X-rays may be taken to get a good look at the structures supporting the teeth, which are otherwise not visible to the naked eye.

Some people justify skipping dental exams because they aren’t experiencing any symptoms or pain. The problem with some dental diseases is that they don’t cause noticeable pain or problems until they are in the advanced stages and your oral health is at serious risk.

Regular Exams Help You Avoid Costly, Invasive Care

Only Dr. Sutton and our team know the warning signs of a potential problem and, when caught early enough, can address it without invasive, costly care. The likelihood of developing a problem that requires uncomfortable treatments, like a root canal, is significantly lower when you see Dr. Sutton every six months for your regularly scheduled exam.

Brushing and Flossing Aren’t Enough to Maintain a Healthy Smile

If you brush twice a day and floss daily, by no means should you stop or change your routine. However, brushing and flossing can miss plaque and tartar buildup, which threaten the health of the teeth. If this plaque and tartar builds up at the gum line, it can turn into gum disease. Our hygienists use special instruments and techniques to “deep clean” the teeth, removing plaque and tartar and preventing cavities, gum disease and other problems.

Exams Are a Great Time to Discuss Optional Treatment

Regularly scheduled exams are an excellent opportunity to discuss anything that bothers you about your smile. Perhaps you have a small gap in between your front teeth, or other spacing problems that bother you. Maybe you feel embarrassed by stains or discoloration. Feel free to bring up these concerns with Dr. Sutton, so he can outline your treatment options.
