Healthy Summer Snacks for Teeth

Tooth-friendly summer snacksAs summer approaches, it’s hard not to get excited about delicious, hot weather treats like candy and popsicles. But although tasty, these treats can wreak havoc on your teeth. If you’re searching for healthier alternatives to serve as snacks at your next summer barbecue, Dr. Wayne Sutton and the team at Sonoma Smiles are here to help. Here, we share our favorite teeth-friendly summer snacks that are both delicious and nutritious.

Smoothie Pops

For a healthy alternative to store-bought Popsicles, try smoothie pops. Blend some of your favorite fruits (e.g., mango, strawberries, blueberries) with honey or milk in a blender. Pour the liquid into ice pop molds and insert Popsicle sticks into them. Freeze the molds until they are solid.

Cheese Cubes

Cheese is high on calcium, which strengthens tooth enamel. Have some low-fat cheese cubes on hand to serve as everyday snacks or as appetizers at your summer parties. Try serving cheese with crackers, celery sticks or apple slices.

Yogurt Parfaits

Like cheese, yogurt is also high in calcium, making it a great teeth-friendly snack. Yogurt parfaits are great for summer parties and are easy to prepare. Simply place a few spoonfuls of your favorite low-fat yogurt in a tall glass and sprinkle granola, strawberries and blueberries on top.

Fruit Kebobs

Fresh fruit is an excellent source of sweetness without the artificial sugars of cookies or store-bought Popsicles. Prepare this summer favorite by cutting up bananas, cantaloupe, kiwi, strawberries and your other favorite fruits into bite-sized pieces. Thread the fruit chunks onto skewers and serve.

A Word on Snacking

Snacking frequently makes it easier for bacteria to grow in the mouth and form plaque. For this reason, dentists, like Dr. Sutton, recommend limiting the number of snacks during the day to prevent cavities. Be sure to drink plenty of water during and after snacking to cleanse the mouth of bacteria and food particles.
